23 September

Dear All,

Today we started by reading an article found by Andrea Leone regarding treatise . We read the beginning part, to get an idea of how the score was approached.

It focused on the two constants ( with general consistence) of the score : The lifeline in the center of the page and the Stave at the bottom.

here maybe interesting to see the relation between the concept of constant within the score and constant as in the constant-variable organisation of a logical system .

We then went on to look at page 1-6 of the Score. We tried interpreting the symbols and give it life. I will not recap this but you can find it in the video uploaded on the drive !

---
We then listened to some renditions of the score. You can find them in #archive of discord. There also other useful links all gathered there !

Also in discord , there is a new subthread for sharing some of your past work ! Please, share some of your thoughts, past work, past writings, stuff you've been reading so we can get an idea of your interests and your work :)

----

And yes : Please please please fill in the doodle ! even if you cannot do it, that helps us have an image of the whole people who can attend .

See you all soon , much love !

16 September ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear All,

Thank you to all who participated today ! We had more people free than last week and so were able to get a nice discussion going. Ricardo, a friend of Pedro and Federico also joined in onto to the meeting (Welcome !).

I very much look forward to participating in a collective reading with the whole group, hearing everybody's insights about Wittgenstein's work and art and so many other things : it's always super inspiring !

P

Don't worry, things will settle in soon as we get the project underway.I understand that the collective is still wobbly and that we're all getting back into the groove of routines. I am still 'unsummering' myself :) !

Today's video recordign has been uploaded on the drive. You can access it either through the Collective website (start (hotglue.me))

Some Practical Info and Notes:

1. Time next meeting : Andrea will make a doodle but it is probable that Thursday 19-20.30 GMT+1 will happen again ? When is everyone availble ? Please fill in the doodle , thanks !

2. A small assignment : We will engage with Wittgenstein. Therefore we would like to have a more productive discussion by already pre-reading at home. Please read the preface, and Proposition 1-2.024. That way we can have an insightful re-reading in group and pool all of our creativity and ideas and thoughts together !

3.Riccardo when you can, can you give us some news about the 'youtube-like' alternatives ? Do you have some insights into the one that is best for us ?

Recap
--------------

19.00

Started the meeting and talked briefly about the budget meeting happenning tomorrow.

Then we recapped what was said and reflected last week's meeting in the relation between Wittgenstein and Cardew. ( see uploaded video on google drive from last week and email recap for more details).

We approached a bit more detail Cardew.

Is Cardew's score autonomous ? Ie: Can it exist without any further use, as a stand-alone work of 'art' ?

Is Treatise only a musical score or also a visual score. ? We all seem to agree that it isn't just musical. Federico adds that in order to not make the score into a stand-alone work of art and instead use it as a score we must approach it from a biased view point : ie. only as symbols with musical information.
Mariana asks whether past experiences and knowledges influence the way a score is approached. How does our experience as western musicians affect our interpretation ? How does Mariana's visual art background affects her reading of the work ? I suggest that above all, Treatise might be a score about the act of doing itself , about the act of performing.

There is a consensus that there is an influence ( of course !) of backgrounds etc.. in the way the score is read . This brings the question if there some interpretations that are better than others ? Though interpretations is up to the performer ( which must assign values, rules etc.. to the different information present on each page) there is a logic in the way the symbols follow each other.

Can the symbols in Cardew's work act as the points of a structure ? Meaning that each interpretation within the possible structures that can be created from drawing the lines between those points : ie. interpreting the symbols in the score. To make an example : Imagine you have 6 points , you can connect them in the form of a hexagone or a start, or two triangles. All of those structures are valid within the given space of the points but each of those connects the points in a different way, distributes energy in a different way.

I also wonder if that can be a useful way of seeing interpretation and if that may help bring this project within a political sphere ( idea of different structures, but same points being connected )

--------------

Towards the end we started reading the Preface fo Wittgenstein 's work but there wasn't much time left so we called it a day quite soon.

In order to have a more guided discussion we decided to read

Until proposition 2.024 of Wittgenstein's tractatus

I think that is all for now. I will also send a recap email about tomorrow's budget plan meeting if needed :)

Besos a todos,
Filippo

Dear All,

Today we had our first 'regular' meeting ( set as Thursday 7-8.30 pm) . Many could not attend so Andrea made a doodle for other possibilities within the week to meet. Please do fill it in when you can. Thanks !

For a short recap:

1. We shortly looked at hotglue. You can find the whole webpage at start (hotglue.me) . For now we just created a space for all recap emails to be found (email log)
and a sub page for the Project itself.

By typing start (hotglue.me)/edit into the URL you can edit the webpage. If you have not used hotglue so far, don't worry, the learning curve is quite un-steep and it should be a fun process for everyone interested. We'll probably be having a special zoom just for some tips on how to use it.

2. We are still waiting on Riccardo to upload the videos on peertube.Don't hesitate to reach out if you need some help also with the workload. Thank you Riccardo

3. We talked about the connection between Wittgenstein's work and Cardew's. We were going to read Wittgenstein but ended up reading Chapter 2 of "Wittgenstein and Cardew" by Marta Polo Pujadaswhich you can find here : Philosophy of Music (hotglue.me)

We did a really slow reading, also in part because none of us were philosophers which is both in some sense a good thing (?) so we come at it without any preconception. Of course the same lack of knowledge can be very hindering. I think a slow reading like this, especially because it concerns the project itself and is about starting to put both work in relation together, will be very healthy to have with the majority of the group.

In general we tackled these things in the slow reading, you can find the recorded meeting in the drive, please read the article !!!

A.Transcendence within both works. Transcendence is a term for what is outside the sensible. We can read it within this project as what escapes meaning and sense-making. One can think of proposition N.7 in Wittgenstein : "Whereof one cannot speak, one must be silent" .

B.Connection between both works

C. Ethics within both work : What is ethics ? What is meant by ethics within the two works.

I definitely missed interesting talking points so if you have some time, please do watch at least some of the zoom meeting.

4. Before finishing the meeting we talked about this idea of regular meeting.

Federico made the point that we should start subdividing meetings according to disciplines.

Andrea mentionned that maybe it's better to still have 2-3 joint sessions really getting into the relation between Cardew and Wittgenstein work before we separate into different sessions.

Then the idea would be the following:

1 regular meeting for Cardew ( Music oriented) x Week

1 regular meeting for Wittgenstein ( philosophy oriented) x week

Joint sessions and logistic sessions when needed.

Possibly to install 1 regular joint session once a month or so to see what everybody has been up to.

Anyway, because today's meeting was not too long and with not so many people, I think that this recap is enough to give you an idea of what we covered.

Please fill in the doodle :) !

Besos !

31 August 2021 ------------------------------------- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Dear All,

Thank you for your participation in today’s meetings. Here’s a recap and some further points of action. The chat and Video meetings have been recorded and can be find on the drive of the collective, along with other documents that were previously uploaded such as the Cardew Score and the Wittgenstein book ( in English).

Link here(please contact us if you do not have access yet.)

Project Treatise - Google Drive

1)

A provisional recurring group meeting has been set to take place every Thursday 7-8.30 PM GMT +1

The next group meeting will be held on Thursday 9 September from 7 to 8.30 PM

Other meetings just for Music or Philosophy will take place on top of this ( please bottom of email).

2)

There are still people who have not signed up on the discord that Federico Altare. If I have counted well, we are still missing Darius, Marianna and Sofia.

I know that some of them are not active on Whatsapp, also for privacy reasons. So if you need a link again, please let me know and I will contact Federico so he can make a new link which I will send to you on Email.

Discord will be VERY useful in setting sub-groups of music and philosophy and organising meetings. You can have itApp on your phone so extra points for usage.

Ideally, once everyone is on Discord, we can switch to that space as the main mode of communication for the collective. How does this sound for everybody ?

3)

We have also looked at possible working spaces for the Collective. Thanks to Riccardo for a lot of links !

For your own interest you can access Fediverse.Party - explore federated networks

Where there are a bunch of ‘alternative’ sites and apps to do a bunch of things.

I think this is important : if we can avoid using Youtube and Google etc.. it falls in line with what the Collective is about.

Because we could not really find anything of a working Space in there , we have decided to go for Hotglue. Hotglue is a site built, I think, by some people of the Piet Zwart Instituut in Rotterdam.

It is a bit clunky to use but I assure you that you can get used to it quite soon.

We are having a Zoom meeting on Wednesday 8th September 10AM to 2PM (GMT+1) to get acquainted with the site and start building different sub pages etc..

These are the people who will take part, If you would also like to help building the site, please let me know or just join on the zoom link that I will send on Wednesday 8th September. :

Carmel (Thanks for making the Hotglue page !)

Andrea

Federico

Filippo

Pedro

This is the useful hotglue links:

mad.hotglue.me

to log in with password and username ( and then edit)

mad.hotglue.me/edit

username: mad

password :wittgensteinandcardew

Please DO NOT try to make changes yet if you are not a bit acquainted with the platform ( I know this from experience) . We will definitely have a short info session about this at some point. Updates will follow.

Once we have the ‘site’/ working space up and running we can start using it as a common working space for the collective. It can look like this:

HOMEPAGE (hotglue.me)

--------

4) Some other points of actions for the coming days/week

Riccardo will set up a Peertube account for the collective. If you have the energy and time, you can also start uploading the Videos from the Google Drive to the Peertube account so we use the Drive for documentation etc… Thanks Riccardo !

Once that is done, we can for example link the videos to the hotglue site so that everything is gathered under one site.

Riccardo will set It up either with one of two emails:

madcollectivemad@gmail.com

or

mutuallyassureddeconstruction@gmail.com

NOTE: This is also a point of talk for next time , which email to use for contacts etc ?? madcollectivemad seems a bit easier to write… ANOTHER NOTE: if we do go for the madcollectivemad one then we need to start being active on it to avoid it being considered a spam email by the big google.

5)Budget

We would like to organise a meeting soon with the following people to make a budget plan . Ideally, in order to start talking with the Krea Collective, we would like to have the Budget Plan done by October 1st !

Here’s the people to make the Budget:

Filippo

Andrea

Marco

Xavier ( if you know anything about book printing etc..)

We should set a list of thigns to include in it, ideally that also includes payment for us as ‘workers’ for the collective. More to follow soon, PROBABLY ON DISCORD.

24 August 2021 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey all,

Thank you to all who took part today. Your insights and positive vibes were truly inspiring and i'm very much looking forward to what is coming next both in terms of music, of reflection and of logistical possibilities ! To the others, do not worry, everything is up on the google drive and we will soon have a more organised working space.

Sum-up Concept and my reflection for possible next conceptual steps
Today we had an initial introduction by everyone who was there and continued with re-statement of the project itself and the collective's aim. We then continued with a reflection on system, anti-system and possible ways of thinking of spaces of expression with-in or with-out the current system.

The notion of deconstruction was brought forward as a possible way to forge an attack on the system by inspecting its parts yet without openly antagonising ourselves to it. In a sense "showing" rather than pointing compulsively. At this point, it might be useful to think about what a system is and come up with a few possible definitions. A kind of lexical archive that we can put on the common working space. I've also uploaded on the drive three venn style diagrams which can help us visualise the three type of approaches to constructing spaces we discussed during the meeting.

I realise there was a quite a lot of philosophical talk and I'm sorry if this extranged or alienated some of the participants. Please know that in this there are no wrong answers and that if you feel you are a non-expert , this is exactly why you can contribute from a crystalline, unecumubured position. Something that Cardew would have very much wanted in his later Maoist period ;)
I also want to stress that once we are a bit more organised with the working spaces, we'll form sub-groups where everyone will be able to contribute in a way that is more familiar and falling in line more with their practice ! a bit of patience and we will go 200 MPH !

This goes into what Carmel said : How to deconstruct something without already applying a bias through this deconstruction ? For example, one may separate a sentence into its parts, but who is to say that the act of separation isnt itself already biased. I think that a possible approach can be to come up with exercises, art, actions that would enable to reach this mindset where we are truly open to reception and not subjectively positioned. I think this can also lead to communication that is truly communicative, rather than the mere positioning of subjective stances.

In this sense, I do feel ( not think here) that improvisation as a method could be productive in this. Also linked to this is 'Pensiero Debole' , by Philosopher Rovatti ( i think that is the name ? Will have to look it up)

------------- Working points for next session:

Federico and Ege will set up the discord. Everyone should do a discord account. This could be a useful platform for subgroups and the organisation of meetings etc..

Riccardo and Andrea will share some links of alternative platforms for working spaces, cloud drives, simil-youtube etc.. I think this can also be interesting in that it falls within an ethical choice of the system talk we had during the meeting.

We have to set an agreement on what common working platform to use. So far we have in our sight : MIRO, Milanote, Padlet . I imagine that Riccardo will be able to provide alternatives to this so lets keep each other posted.

One possibility that was discussed is to set up a youtube account with unlisted videos where we upload the zoom meeting for ease of checking. There should also be an automatic transcirption service with youtube so that can also be good.

One other thing was the possibility of setting up a podcast account through Buzzsprout or other similar services. This way we can also condense meeting reflections into 10, 20 min podcast that we can already propagandise through the social space.

-----

What's next ?

Witth the people remaining at the end of the meeting we have agree that MONDAY 30TH August, or around that week would be good to have an answer for all working points listed above. I suggest that we hold a meeting of logistics the same day with a smaller circle to finalise this.

I also suggest that in the same week we hold again a meeting where the people who want to can join for collective slow-reading of Wittgentsein. Other meetings, for example for the music, can be set up in that week too , but this could be done with discord.

Please let me know you have seen this message either through whatsapp or by responding to it !

Best and wishing you all a very happy deconstruction,

7 August 2021

We are the MAD Collective. A recently formed collective created by Filippo Deorsola (Pianist, Composer, Researcher) and Andrea Leone (Saxophonist, Composer) M.A.D stands for ‘Mutually Assured Deconstruction”.

Here a practical description

The M.A.D. Collective aims to create physical and abstract spaces where collaborative, interdisciplinary artistic research and production can take place. Through experimentation in small and big formations and by approaching Music and Art as entities with social repercussions, the collective will create a network of artistic theories and practices which, like culture, are meant to be shared with people and circulate within society.

Here a Biography :

One of the great insights of 20th Century theorists (Foucault, Deleuze, etc..) was asserting that mental illness was not simply a personal issue, resulting from biological and chemical imbalances within the brain, but a social issue resulting directly from the dysfunctional relation between subject and (Capitalist) society: Madness is not simply a natural category, but a political one. The constantly fluctuating types of mental illnesses throughout time, as well as the dominance of specific neurotic and psychotic troubles within a given time frame (Anxiety has become endemic, particularly to Western Societies) point directly to the deep connection between an individual, the organisation of its mental energy and the Society in which they exist.

The increasing multiplicity of mental health problems within all categories of age and especially the youth, points, additionally, to the increasing mental stress that Capitalism, as an economic and libidinal structure, is putting on us. Is the madman truly mad or is madness simply a by-product of today’s society ? Is the Madman simply one because it refuses to engage with Neoliberal ideological representations and instead chooses to dwell within its own representation of reality?

MAD collective highlights the link between madness and the productive potential it can acquire if it is considered within a political and social sphere. By integrating madness within its creative process, the collective aims to unlock the truly miraculous potential of Folly. Indeed what is a miracle if not the social and generalised manifestation of subjective psychosis ? By being M.A.D., we aim to counter the miracle of Capitalism with our own peculiar form of miracle, our own generalised psychotic state. One that would be more sane by being less so. This psychotic state -- induced by a habit of compulsive abuse of multi-disciplinarity --mirrors our belief that a new category of political subjectivity is urgently needed. Whatever this subjectivity might come to mean in the future, we would like to suggest, as its first nomenclature: Monumental-Hysterical Hyperalternative Avant-Garde. or MHHA for short. There is no further meaning behind this name: It simply aims to make the emergence of this new subjectivity possible in the first place.

If socio-ideological processes need a generalised psychosis to protect themselves from scrutiny, is the madman truly M.A.D. ? Or is his madness the only key to keeping himself sane ? If it is indeed the case that social madness has become the new social sanity, then one should aim to be M.A.D. , as it would prove to be the most subversive way to deconstruct society, without destroying oneself in the process. Mutually assured destruction ?

No.

¡MUTUALLY ASSURED DECONSTRUCTION!

----------

Why are we contacting you ?

If you are receiving this email, it means that one way or another, whether in the space of an hour, a month, a concert, a talk, whether peripherally or in close proximity, we deeply enjoyed working with you and witnessing your creative process. We are admirative of the care that you put in bringing your vision to life and the maturity of thought you have shown in doing so. There is potentiality of art in EVERYTHING that one does and through your work – whether musical, photographic, philosophical, graphic, scientific, —you have fundamentally displayed this.

Therefore, we would very much like to work with you -- as full member of the collective, as guest or as feedback/commentator -- in our upcoming project!

Project description

The project was originally born out of a one-off idea for an application to Grachtenfestival 2021. The very basic concept was to put in relation Cornelius Cardew’s composition Treatise -- a graphic score made up of geometrical shapes without any performance direction whatsoever -- and Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, which notoriously had a strong influence on the Composer’s work. The idea was then to use Tractatus as a road into the score, extracting possible approaches to the graphic score from Wittgenstein’s work.

We quickly realised that to put this fairly ‘straightforward’ idea to work would require more than just a one-off concert. Both works, in their own respective fields, are important milestones of 20th Century European Culture, and as such demand(ed) to be treated with precision to fully elucidate their philosophical, artistic and social implications. We think, such precision can only be obtained by engaging with the works through a multi-disciplinary project carried out over a long period of time and which will involve artist and theorists from many different backgrounds and disciplines.

But what is Wittgenstein’s Tractatus about? Wittgenstein aims to offer a solution to the problematics of language, thought, and their relation to the world. He does so through the laying out of 7 basic propositions, these 7 propositions are expanded decimally. For example, proposition 2.2 is further elaboration of proposition 2. 2.22 an expansion of proposition 2.2 and so on.

For clarity’s sake, we will focus here only on the first proposition, four of its sub-categories, and the second proposition. We are also ourselves only starting this reflection, it is a work in a progress.

1. The world is everything that is the case.

1.1 The world is the totality of facts, not of things.
1.11 The world is determined by the facts, and by their being all the facts.
1.12 For the totality of facts determines what is the case, and also whatever is not the case.
1.13 The facts in logical space are the world.

2. What is the case [a fact] is the existence of states of affairs.

------

What is important to understand here is that

· Wittgenstein claims that the world consists of facts, rather than of objects ( see 1.1).

· Fact are existing state of affairs ( see proposition 2.).

· State of affairs are groupings of objects. Objects have a number of properties which make them fit together with other objects in various ways.

· Therefore an object’s properties determine the possibilities of interaction with other objects.

· The state of affairs, one could say situation, which exist could have been otherwise. The relation between objects could have been different (see 1.12)

· This means that state of affairs are either existing as actual or as possibility.

The MAD collective is interested precisely in the state of affairs that exist as possibility. Better said, how to actualise something that could be? What is the role of language in making things appear? Can language unlock pathways of exploration? How can Language contribute to creating alternatives to the current dogma?

The question becomes two-fold when Cardew’s Treatise is put back into the picture: how can a graphic score represent not what is but what could be and therefore what can be actualised? How does Cardew approach such a question and how can we, as artists and theorists, represent things that could be so that they become tangible possibilities that we can actualise into the world?

Both Wittgenstein and Cardew seem to coalesce around a supposed autonomy of representation, whether linguistic or visual. At first glance, it seems to us, that it is precisely this autonomy that would enable representations to almost will things into existence. Is it in this autonomy of representation that alternatives may be unlocked?

Therefore, does reality as we experience it emerge from representation or does representation emerge from an immoveable reality?

What then can this mean in a social and political context?

Coming back to MAD Collective founding statement: can representations be a form with which to “transmit psychosis” from individual to individual so that this new political subjectivity (see biography) may start to emerge? Throughout the project, by establishing discussions and reflections with all the people involved, we aim to reach a deeper understanding of the questions and assumptions we have posed.

Practical project description

MAD collective aims to reintegrate this project into its larger agenda in three ways:

A) By engaging in a multidisciplinary reading of the two works and their relation:

· Small and big musical ensembles playing through parts of the score. The idea is that Andrea (Sax) and Filippo ( Piano) will always be part of each of these units as kind of central axis from which to form different interpretative approaches for the score

· Production of short texts, essays and analysis on the two works

· Production of visual art ( photography, painting etc..)

· Possible production of short literary works and Poetry

· Possible production of multimedia art through collage of the musical and visual parts

· Possible production Diagrams and statistics in playful ‘art-meets-science’ way ( think of the Book ‘Learning from Las Vegas’ and its diagrams documenting the different Casino Signs of the Las Vegas strip – PDF here : FROM.tif (wordpress.com)

B) By examining the link between linguistic and visual representation and their social, political and artistic potential

· Philosophical clarification of this relation through a feedback loop created thanks to continuous exchanges with all theorists ( and also artists) involved

· Production of texts, essays and analysis looking at this relation from different perspectives ( possible examples: Urban theory, Psychoanalysis, Aesthetics, Ethics, Philosophy, Theology etc.)

C) By finding ways to re-incorporate --either as further individual/collective research or as future collective projects -- these new-found insights into the MAD Collective organism, so that new patterns of social, political and artistic actions may be found and effectuated.

· Semi-regular ( ie : bi-yearly) meetings in physical location over the time of a week. To create a sort of ‘Agora’, where all participants of this project can boost each other’s thoughts, feed each others reflections, inspire each other and move towards a common project goal by way of this ‘Agora process’

· These semi-regular meetings can also be small ‘festivals’ where public lectures, concerts and vernissages are done. Thereby already creating an opening unto the public and planting the seeds for this new political subjectivity to emerge in the social.

· Future projects

· Reflections opening up on further questions

· Single discipline events ( not preferred)

· Multidisciplinary events

· ‘Happenings’ and concrete politico-artistic action

· Other ? Suggestions are welcome !

End Result

As you see from this email, this is quite a complex and long project. We expect that a realistic publishing date could be around September 2023. This is also because we are deeply interested in creating a process in which insights, pathways of exploration – and therefore new ‘state of affairs’-- may be found. In publishing the ‘result’ in 2023, we do not aim to release a product, but rather to make our collective process visible.

This is what we have in mind so far as possible end-goal(s) for this project

1. a medium sized book of A4 dimensions containing essays, photos, and other visual art. Think of a crossover between a museum catalogue, a philosophy book, diagrams and photo depository.

2. A set of photographs and videos documenting the creative process of the project and in specific of these semi-regular meetings ( see Practical project description, Point C)

3. Album containing all Small and Large musical ensembles reading of the graphic score. ( For Example Unit1 : pg 1-5 , Unit 2 : pg 10-20, and so on). Possibly culminating in a recording where ALL musicians involved in the whole project play together.

4. Possibly a dedicated website, making the process visible as well as allowing for the presentation of multi-media pieces

5. The research led by units of two-three theorists could be published as a stand-alone to complement the project in a 30-50 page format.

As you can see we are still brainstorming, and we would like to make clear that your contribution is most welcome not only artistically and theoretically but also on these more ‘logistical/practical’ parts of the project.

How will this project be financed ?

For now, this is the most uncertain part of the project, as it still is very recent. We will craft around this part in the very near future and should be able to give you a more precise financial and logistical plan of the project itself as we reach end of 2021 and start getting answers from the different funding applications we have done and will do.

Ideally, a somewhat large percentage of revenue gathered from sales of CD, Book and other physical by products of this process would be for the MAD Collective to advance and develop its future projects and research. Nevertheless, We are open to different arrangements depending on the need and desires of every contributor in the project.

This shouldn’t even need to be said but all artists involved within the project are of course free to use their own contribution to the work to advance their own practice and career.

-------------

We hope that you may find this project worth of your interest and time.

Please feel free to respond to this email any way you see fit so we know that you are in , regardless of your final degree of participation in the project.

You may also get in touch with Filippo at +32495788954 or at filippodeorsolamusic@gmail.com and he will be happy to respond to any question you might have !

We will probably start setting up some zoom meeting soon to kickstart the project and already hold some digital ‘agora’ talks’ subdivided between relevant disciplines and other sessions thought of more as a multimodal ‘mish-mash of everything’.

If you do not want to take part in those sessions/the project and would like to stop receiving emails please let us know by responding to this email

If you are interested and would like to take part, then please also let us know

Thank you very much for your time, looking forward to working with you !
